A Brief Guide to Defining Money
A Brief Guide to Defining Money The Economics Glossary defines money as follows: Money is a good that acts as a medium of exchange in transactions. Classically it is said that money acts as a unit of account, a store of value, and a medium of exchange. Most authors find that the first two are nonessential properties that follow from the third. In fact, other goods are often better than money at being intertemporal stores of value, since most monies degrade in value over time through inflation or the overthrow of governments. The Purpose of Money So, money isnt just pieces of paper. Its a medium of exchange that facilitates trade. Suppose I have a Wayne Gretzky hockey card that Id like to exchange for a new pair of shoes. Without the use of money, I have to find a person, or combination of people who have an extra pair of shoes to give up, and just happen to be looking for a Wayne Gretzky hockey card. Quite obviously, this would be quite difficult. This is known as the double coincidence of wants problem: [T]he double coincidence is the situation where the supplier of good A wants good B and the supplier of good B wants good A. The point is that the institution of money gives us a more flexible approach to trade than barter, which has the double coincidence of wants problem. Also known as dual coincidence of wants. Since money is a recognized medium of exchange, I do not have to find someone who has a pair of new shoes and is looking for a Wayne Gretzky hockey card. I just need to find someone who is looking for a Gretzky card who is willing to pay enough money so I can get a new pair at Footlocker. This is a far easier problem, and thus our lives are a lot easier, and our economy more efficient, with the existance of money. How Money Is Measured As for what constitutes money and what does not, the following definition is provided by The Federal Reserve Bank of New York: The Federal Reserve publishes weekly and monthly data on three money supply measures M1, M2, and M3 as well as data on the total amount of debt of the nonfinancial sectors of the U.S. economy... The money supply measures reflect the different degrees of liquidity or spendability - that different types of money have. The narrowest measure, M1, is restricted to the most liquid forms of money; it consists of currency in the hands of the public; travelers checks; demand deposits, and other deposits against which checks can be written. M2 includes M1, plus savings accounts, time deposits of under $100,000, and balances in retail money market mutual funds. M3 includes M2 plus large-denomination ($100,000 or more) time deposits, balances in institutional money funds, repurchase liabilities issued by depository institutions, and Eurodollars held by U.S. residents at foreign branches of U.S. banks and at all banks in the United Kingdom and Canada. So there are several different classifications of money. Note that credit cards are not a form of money. Note that money is not the same thing as wealth. We cannot make ourselves richer by simply printing more money.

Self-Publishing Tips from one of the UKs Bestselling Authors
Self-Publishing Tips from one of the UKs Bestselling Authors Self-Publishing Tips from one of the UK's Bestselling Authors For those of you who are stillà skepticalà about the extent of self-publishing's promise, Adam Croft is all the inspiration you need. With 150,000 copies sold in the first quarter ofà 2016 and a book deal with Amazon, things are only looking up for this new indie giant.à In this post, he shares his top tips for self-publishing.When youââ¬â¢re first starting out as an author, it can be incredibly daunting. I remember the feeling well. Back when I started self-publishing in 2011, there really wasnââ¬â¢t much information or tips out there on how to market your books and be successful at it. I had to find my own way, and along the way I learnt a lot.à Since then, Iââ¬â¢ve gone on to sell more than half a million books, with my latest becoming the biggest-selling self-published book of the year and landing me a huge publishing deal with Amazon. That took five years of working out what works and what doesnââ¬â¢t. Separating the wheat from the chaff is difficult, espec ially with so many people professing to be self-publishing experts.à Even today, thereââ¬â¢s a lot of rubbish out there in the industry. People with barely a few hundred sales put themselves up as gurus to tell others what works and what doesnââ¬â¢t. The signal to noise ratio is low. I hope to cut through that. Here are my top tips based on five years of experience, half a million sales and the biggest-selling indie book of the year.Treat your writing as a businessThis is absolutely paramount. Youââ¬â¢re creating a product and selling it to customers. If that makes you uncomfortable, stop reading now and find a traditional publisher. You need to be business-minded and thinking about profit margins. Otherwise, youââ¬â¢re not after self-publishing; youââ¬â¢re after vanity publishing, which is a whole different ball-game.Always think about the long-termYou wonââ¬â¢t release your first book and get big sales. You just wonââ¬â¢t. In fact, once youââ¬â¢ve self-published your first book, pat yourself on the back and get on with writing another two. New readers simply arenââ¬â¢t going to flock to your one single book - they like to stick with a certain author. Give them a reason to want to invest in you.Likewise, donââ¬â¢t concern yourself with getting sales straight away. You need to be thinking about future-proofing your business and your career, which leads me on toâ⬠¦Get a mailing listSign up for a MailChimp account and get yourself a mailing list. Simply having readers buy your book and then disappear into the ether is not what you want. You need to be able to get in touch with them and let them know when youââ¬â¢ve got a new book out. Trust me: they wonââ¬â¢t be searching your name on Amazon every couple of weeks to see if youââ¬â¢ve got a new one. They wonââ¬â¢t even remember your name once theyââ¬â¢ve put the book down. Theyââ¬â¢ll be straight onto the next author whoââ¬â¢s marketing his or her books better than you. This is my number one tip in terms of marketing, and I really canââ¬â¢t overstate it enough. For more information on how to make mailing lists really work, check out Nick Stephensonââ¬â¢s books - Reader Magnets, in particular, or even his exhaustive interview on the Reedsy blog. An Issue Facing Human Resource Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
An Issue Facing Human Resource - Research Paper Example Rays of light slip through the recently washed window, as the sun begins its journey through the sky. A copy machine sounds in the background as well as the quiet hum of hundreds of people beginning their day in their cubical. This is the typical office scene that has defined work culture for the past several decades. There is a change on the horizon, however, that has begun to alter this scene and could prove to permanently change what the ââ¬Ëtypicalââ¬â¢ office is defined as. This change, brought on by advance technology and rising cost for both employers and employees is, telecommuting. Telecommuting, or an employee working from home, is quickly becoming the norm for many employees today. It comes with both benefits and challenges, and as with most changes to the workplace, the responsibility for ironing out this transition has been placed on human resource shoulders. However, by taking an in-depth look into the specific challenges this change brings, such as: calculating w ork hours, maintaining office culture and community, and keeping lines of communication open. One can successfully apply good human resource strategies to them, and affectively integrate this new technological practice into the company for all to benefit. The first challenge brought by telecommuting is how to calculate hours worked. When an employee is working from home it is hard for a company to affectively manage whether or not time is spent working or doing other things. One successful approach to this issue is implementing performance management skills for all departments company wide. Performance management bases rewards, and job recognition on the outcome produced, as well as the process one takes in achieving to said outcome. This proves most beneficial when trying to manage the success of an employees work hours when they are away from the office. The company can then set up a schedule for how many hours it should take to complete a task and pay the employee accordingly. Th is type of performance management is not only beneficial for employees that are telecommuting, however, it also benefits for all employees and managers. The American Society for Public Administration, upon switching to a performance management style, stated that, ââ¬Å"Requirements for outcomes-based performance management are increasing performance-evaluation activities at all government levelsâ⬠(Heinrich 712). This increase in performance evaluation activities comes as a direct result of the fact that performance management focuses on the steps needed to complete the task, it allows room for the employee to feel comfortable asking for help when needed, and not just when a major problem arises, and it gives direct feedback and praise for a job well done. This management style also requires continual communication between employee and management, which helps the telecommuter stay, focused and connected with their company. Another challenge telecommuting brings, that relies he avily on the human resource department to remedy, is maintaining office culture and community when employees are not working in the office. A study done by the Journal of Applied Psychology found that telecommuting less than two days a week had little to no affect on the workplace relationships, however, they stated, ââ¬Å" high-intensity telecommuting (more than 2.5 days a week) accentuated telecommuting's beneficial effects on work-family conflict but harmed

Mystical experience Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Mystical experience - Assignment Example Such experiences are always spiritual, though they may not be; they are not limited to priests or monks. However, all individual religious experiences are entrenched in mystical states of consciousness, yet all mystical experiences are partially religious. Although mystical experiences occur commonly, they happen unbidden to someone perhaps once or severally in a lifetime. Mystical experiences are for example, those of oneness with nature and the deeper self, the mystic is always a tragic form, torn by the tensions between the soul and the body, between the spiritual and physical. He is beleaguered by his bodily chains that limit him to this meager realism; he is drawn to the elusive, he longs for the inspiring, for the best. He desires to free himself, to rise further. The world surrounding him is a dark, awful place, his spirit sores and soars, attempting to flee its worldly prison. William James identified four Mystical characteristics; Ineffability, where mystical states are more similar to states of feeling than intelligence, slightly shaded with fine nuances that are hard to express in their import and splendor to another. As a result, much mystical writing is filled with symbolism and paradoxes1. Noetic quality experiences are conditions of insight, knowledge, revelation, awareness, and illumination beyond the grab of the intelligence. There is knowledge of unity with the totality, of immorality of the soul, of immense truths. Space and time are exceeded. Transiency, mystical experiences fleet in linear time, even though they tend to be eternal. It is rare to maintain a mystical state for long hours. For instance, Eastern adepts are capable of sustaining prolonged stages of Samadhi, a mystical condition of one-pointed meditation; and some allegedly are able to maintain the highest states of nirvana. Passivity, the personal feels held by a greater power and swept up. This can be accompanied by a feeling of division from bodily consciousness, trance, or ph enomena like automatists, healing powers, voices, and visions. Such examples are viewed in Eastern thought as conditions of pseudo-enlightenment. Religious mysticism makes schools and accumulates traditions, much less common than people think. For example, in Christianity, mysticism is usually self-indulgent and ascetic in nature; in the Vedanta institution it is monistic, in the Sankhya institution it is dualistic. Since mystical experiences vary to a large degree, the mystical feeling of union, emancipation, and enlargement has no specific rational content on its own. Therefore, the non-mystic is ever gratified to confer a greater authority to the experience or to the mystic. Mystical consciousness simplifies the way in which truth is procured more significantly. The truth or validity-revealing character of a mystical experience as with other knowledge does not depend on the validity of the integrated theories such as those determined by the culture within which the experience is felt. The validity of the integrated speculation is relative to the know-how led to them earlier and the experiences which are made possible by themselves. It must be likely for the experience smash through the theories inclusive of the incorporated theories and make people to remake them. More positively, mysticism might help to liberate traditions from most of its deforming influences. Part II. Question 6 The life and works of St. Theresa of Avila In mid-life, St. Teresa underwent a deep conversion experience,

Reflection on My Learning Styles Essay
How do they reflect on my learning? I will try to do my own research for information but will ask others for their opinion whenever necessary. I tend or try to approach things with a constant logic, taking things step by step, considering all factors before coming to any conclusion, trying to leave nothing out. I act thoughtfully but efficiently and try and get on with my learning, taking my time over work to perfect it the best I can. I often question myself, does my work make sense? I may offer interesting ideas and concepts even when it may not be directly relevant at the time, but sometimes get worried when hurried or put under undue pressure. I find it difficult when Iââ¬â¢m put on the spot or in the limelight; this makes me feel uncomfortable and pressured, as fast thinking isnââ¬â¢t a strong point. Although this may be more down to a lack of experience of being in this situation. What will this mean for my learning? This means I will take a step back to observe and listen to others, thinking before acting. I take time to explore and prepare between ideas, reviewing what I have learned and coming to a conclusion in my own time. I get my work done by due deadlines required but sometimes find it hard to work under pressure or in noisy areas. I need coaching and feedback at times to point me in the right direction and sometimes need things explained in a simple manner, sometimes in depth. What does this mean for me as a practitioner? I will take my time to think about activates to make sure I have covered all angles and with the experience of how things went. I will come to a conclusion at the end when I have had time to think it back; could I have done that better? Were the children interested? Would they like to repeat the activity again? After being on courses or observing others, if its good idea, I will implement it to my practices and give it a trial as Iââ¬â¢m keen to try out new ideas. I will model ideas and take turns in activities. I will take on other peopleââ¬â¢s points of views without making any judgement, giving direct instructions on how things should be done.
